This Gray Panther position paper is presented as a response to the Medicare plan of Senator Ron Wyden and Congressman Paul Ryan entitled “Guaranteed Choices to Strengthen Medicare and Health Security for All.” It is the position of the Gray Panthers that the Wyden-Ryan plan would punish Medicare enrollees for health care inflation – over which they have no control – while the real drivers of escalating health care costs remain unaddressed. Solutions to the actual causes of health care inflation are offered in this paper.
Institutional racism often results in events such as an unjustifiable death of an African American citizen at the hands of the police. These events induce the leaders of the dominant white society to call for “a conversation about racism,” which results in no meaningful change. This article suggests that a meaningful conversation could be had about the influence of social science on U.S. criminal justice policy—especially juvenile justice.
This blog is mostly about health care reform in the United States. I say mostly because meaningful health care reform necessitates government action and, consequently, public funding. For that reason, overhauling a palpably shameful U.S. health care system cannot be separated from the folly of unnecessary wars, bank bailouts, interest payment on the Federal debt, and myriad other fiscally-related policies that deplete the national treasury. Furthermore, achieving fairness in governance requires a legislative mentality oriented toward meeting basic human needs of constituents as opposed to a mentality of service to the well-heeled and powerful interests represented by K-Street.
