Privatizing (Voucherizing) Medicare: A Major Republican Goal

Privatizing (Voucherizing) Medicare:  A Major Republican Goal

As we proceed through the next few years with the Republican majority in the house of congress and a Republican president, House Speaker Mike Johnson will no doubt set about to achieve a party goal of transforming Medicare into a fully privatized system.  Speaker Johnson has supported a plan for such a transformation for some time.

The plan has repeatedly been put forth and is generally known in the health policy field as a “premium support option.”  The public in general and opponents of the plan know it as a “voucher plan.”  It matters not what the plan is called.  The result of the plan will be a reduction in benefits for Medicare beneficiaries.  We prepared an analysis of the plan for the Gray Panthers in 2012 and forwarded it to the appropriate members of the chamber.

We will continue monitoring plans and legislation impacting Medicare and update our readers on our blog.
